Abstract

The representation of corporeality in the works of William S. Burroughs is unequivocally related to the notion of disgust. For Burroughs, the body is a repulsive, material trap. He describes it as something sickening, abject and utterly fallible. Shocking, extreme depictions of mutations, forceful transformations and violence inflicted on the body have become the hallmark of Burroughs’s fiction. The obscene imagery and naturalistic, drastic scenes are intended to expose the body’s weaknesses, its vulnerability to manipulation and addiction, its physical frailty. The following essay suggests that one of the factors influencing Burroughs’s attitude towards corporeality, was an addiction to opiates, that the artist could never fully overcome.
