Alternative design

Abstract

The article is a part of my doctoral dissertation prepared under the supervision of Professor Lechosław Lameński at the Department of the History of Modern Art of the Institute of Art Sciences of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. The issue of „alternative design” is discussed mainly in the context of the Faculty of Industrial Forms of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, established in the early 1960s, and the „Pracownia Projektowania Alternatywnego” organized by two professors: Andrzej Pawłowski and Mieczysław Górowski.

The paper presents the definitions and inspirations drawn from the activities of the „Arts & Crafts” Movement, the „Bauhaus” school, the Scandinavian design, and the shaping of this type of design through Polish tradition and culture, as well as sozology. The activity of the unique „Pracowania Projektowania Alternatywnego” of the Faculty of Industrial Forms in Krakow was briefly described and illustrated with selected examples of student works.
